The USS Milwaukee, a Freedom-class littoral combat ship, passed through the Welland Canal at Port Colborne on Saturday, Nov. 28.
The US Navy warship was commissioned Sunday, Nov. 21, in Wisconsin. It was built by Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wisconsin and was enroute to its homeport of San Diego, California.
Hundreds of people lined the canal in Port Colborne in the morning and along the length of the waterway as the ship made its way north toward St. Catharines and Lake Ontario. It was assisted through the canal locks by the tug Ocean Ross Gaudreault, from Quebec-based OCEAN
