A Wainfleet farmer lost a tractor, corn planter and skid steer when fire engulfed a barn on his property Saturday.
Wainfleet Fire and Emergency Services fire Chief Harry Flagg said the call came in just after noon, and 24 Wainfleet volunteer firefighters responded to the Gracey Rd. scene, just north of Concession 6.
Haldimand County Fire and Emergency Services, West Lincoln Fire and Emergency Services and Pelham Fire and Emergency Services sent tanker trucks, with two firefighters each, to the fire.
Those tankers, along with Wainfleet’s, shuttled water to the scene from a pond more than two kilometres away.
Two water ponds were set up on Gracey Rd., which was blocked off by Niagara Regional Police, to feed Wainfleet’s equipment.
Heavy, black smoke from the fire was seen nearly 27 kilometres away in Port Colborne.
Flagg said not long before the fire broke out, the farm’s owner let out horses that were inside the barn. He added the farmer had been planning to move hay inside.
An excavator was used to pull the barn’s tin roof, which had collapsed, away so firefighters could hit the blaze with foam.
The fire was not suspicious, and the cause is unknown. There were no reported injuries. Firefighters cleared the scene just after 4:30 p.m.
